Now offered on UAHS Phoenix and Tucson Campuses!

Program Description

The M.D./Ph.D. Program at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson was established in 1990 to provide dual training in medicine and research to talented individuals interested in careers as physician-scientists working in the public and private sectors.  The M.D./Ph.D. program with a Ph.D. in Clinical Translational Sciences is now available to qualified M.D. students at both the Tucson and Phoenix Colleges of Medicine.

The M.D./Ph.D. Dual Degree Program in Clinical Translational Sciences (CTS) prepares students for academic careers involving research and teaching, as well as other research careers (biotechnology, government laboratories, industry, and health-related organizations).  The specific program of study, including course work, is designed jointly by the student, the College of Medicine, and the CTS graduate program.  Typically, seven to eight years are required for completion of the MD and PhD degrees; the first two years at medical school, followed by completion of graduate course work and dissertation research, and then by completion of the clinical medical school requirements.

Students apply to the M.D./Ph.D. program either upon initial application to the College of Medicine (in Tucson or Phoenix), or from students in their first year of medical study.  All applications for the University of Arizona College of Medicine MD/PhD program are reviewed and considered through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS). M.D./Ph.D. Program candidates are expected to have a letter of recommendation that collaborates service with a physician and/or clinical experience. It is important for applicants to our program to possess clinical experiences that demonstrate a solid understanding of the clinical aspect of an M.D./Ph.D. Program.

Detailed information about the M.D./Ph.D. program and the admission process may be found on the main M.D./Ph.D. program website.  Students applying to the M.D./Ph.D. program in Clinical Translational Science may contact CTSsupport@email.arizona.edu for further information about the Ph.D. program and its requirements.
